Animal paintings together with their royal fascination

Posted on 19 April 2012 | 4:09 pm by

Animal paintings extend back to the Seventeenth Century. An animal painter is essentially an artist who makes a specialty of the illustration of animals, either household or wild and untamed. In the early times, animal painters would often collaborate with other artists to who would paint the background or other subjects the animal painter later comes and paints the animal. They would do that mostly during the production of mythological and satirical pieces of art.

One of the founders of animal paintings is Frans Snyders, who specialized in Baroque animal painting technique. The Baroque style used exaggerated motion and clarity, fine but easily interpreted detail to produce tension, drama, grandeur and exuberance in painting, literature, music, dance, architecture and sculpture.

He, at one point in time, worked with Peter Paul Rubens, another famous artist in producing smaller works of art. Frans would work with all the creatures in addition to still life, at the same time Peter would produce the background objects together with landscapes ans scenery. In the hierarchy of genres of painters, animal painters lied on the bottom section, even though the best and highly specialized animal painters would make a very good living. This is because a good number of aristocratic along with regal consumers were more interested in royal paintings because of their subject matter rather than for prestigious acknowledgement, or absence thereof.

Through the eighteenth century, England witnessed the arrival of many animal painters which expert’s state concentrated and produced paintings of racehorses and preferred types of animals that had been regarded as “rich” and different. And also at that time in France, animal paintings were used to decorate living rooms and gardens, where they brought out the outdoors and nature experience in aforementioned.

In the nineteenth century, mass production of animal paintings was done, and sculptors and antiques of animals followed after. They were all collectively known as the animalier. Animalier sculptors were the most reputable and famous of all the animal art. Antoine-Louis Barye (1795-1875) was the most famous animalier painting by then. Barye resided in Paris, France.

Animal paintings are quite widely recognized simply because they cut across all market segments. This is attributed to the character traits and human behavior that are associated with the animal being painted. The children would tend to like the cats, dogs and horse paintings due to their playful and jovial nature. Teenagers would love the tigers and cheetahs because they are fast, strong and vicious, the cougars would appease the young but career woman because they are attractive, yet commanding and the old people would love the lion paintings because lion, who is the King of the jungle, is wise and refined.

Some of the well-known animal paintings include Dead Game by Jan Weenix, Dogs fighting by Frans Snyders, Common foxes in the snow by Friedrich Wilhelm Kuhnert, A Young Tiger playing with its Mother by Eugène Delacroix and Louvre, and life-size portrait of the racehorse Whistle jacket by George Stubbs.
